Power Pinays crash out of the semi finals

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand, September 15, 2013 – The Philippine national women’s volleyball team had a measly output as they lost their 3rd straight game at the Asian Volleyball Championships against China, 25-9, 25-10, 25-8.
Pitted against a much taller and more experienced squad, the Power Pinays came into the match clearly as the underdogs with a tough task at hand; battle the defending champs of the biennial meet.
According to China’s head coach, Lang Ping, there are lessons that they could take from this match regardless of how easily they won it.
“I think today is different. They are pretty short,” she said. “There are some irregular balls. Drop balls. We don’t have that. We’re learning.”
Darlings of the crowd
The newly formed team from PH went into volleyball oblivion after going off the radar for the past three AVC tournaments.
Despite the loss, the Power Pinays seemed to have captured the attention of the fans not only from home, but from the host country as well.
Ranked 16th, the girls are considered the bottom dogs in each of their matches. And sometimes, that’s all you need to get the audience to cheer for you.
After a dismal first two sets, the Philippine team rallied at the 3rd through their good floor defense to close the gap 6-8, to the delight of the crowd.
“They’re happy when they are playing.” said China’s coach. “Their passing was really good. In time, they will improve.”
Continuous improvement
Showing grit and persistence, the girls made China work hard for every point as they dig and receive the attacks sent their way.
This resulted to rallies that elicited dozens of oohs and aahs from the people in attendance at the Chatchai Hall.
Head coach Nestor Pamilar explains the decision to use ace libero Lizlee Ann Gata-Pantone did wonders for the team.
“Kahapon ko pa plano gamitin si Tatan (Gata) against Iran. Kaso hindi pinayagan maglaro dahil walang picture yung official ID niya.” said Pamilar.
And she proved na siya yun.”
Pamilar compliments the girls’ efforts in saving the ball regardless of their clear disadvantage in exposure and cohesion.
“Nakita naman natin, pag pinapaluan sila, naitataas nila.” he said.
“We’ll get there. With hard work, we will.”
The captain is missing
The PLDT Fibr-sponsored team missed the services of team captain Angge Tabaquero due to the injury limitations of her sprained ankle.
Team Physician Raul Alcantara advised Tabaquero to rest the injury and just prepare for the matches that they have bigger chances of winning.
“Gusto maglaro eh. Siyempre China. Gusto niya ma-experience.” said Alcantara. “But we didn’t want to risk it. We don’t want it to get worse.”
Pamilar describes Angge as a real fighter.
“She feels bad na di siya makalaro. Gusto tumulong sa team eh.” he said.

A positive outlook towards the team’s future
Regardless of the low output on their last game, coach Nes Pamilar still thinks his wards would go far.
For him, this is one of the strongest national volleyball teams we have come up with in recent years.
Aiza Maizo-Pontillas top-scored for PH with 10 points from 9 attacks and 1 service ace followed by Honey Royse Tubino with 4, all from spikes.
China’s Zhu Ting had a field day with 12 attacks, 4 blocks and 3 service aces amassing 19 points while Hui Ruoqi and Zeng Chunlel provided good back up with 12 and 10, respectively.
“We will be working harder para mapataas pa ang ranking natin.” adds Pamilar.

  2. we know your point, your criticisms. pero kung iisipin, yes! we have those kinds of players, ang tanong, available ba sila? well-dedicated ba sila kagaya ng mga taong nagrerepresent sa bansa natin ngayon? kasi if oo, nasan sila? binigyan sila ng invitation to irepresent our country but declined due to some reasons, either school or personal (and we respect their decisions naman). Ang samin lang naman, give credits to these players instead of bashing them. We have our own style and in fact, known ang Asian na short talaga. Wag sana nating ijudge yung kakayahan ng mga players natin just by seeing their physical apperances.

“Oo kaya nilang sumabay.but not today”. are you sure??? support support na lang din tayo pag may time.

  5. Nakakatuwang makita silang lumaban para sa Pilipinas. Super all out talaga para mapakitang they deserve to be in the line up. I believe na may mararating talaga sila, even if they lost, grabe yung dedication nila. Nakakaproud! Go lang ng go! =)

  6. Typical Pilipino attitude.

Hindi ba nagiging advantage to any sports ang height..weight..age? And the very famous Pinoy lines. Ikaw ba yung nasa court? Ikaw ba yung nag lalaro?

SUPPORT from any teams or individuals from our country is always supported.

My point is..we could have been more competitive if we have NEW..FRESH..YOUNGER..TALLER players. (Eto na sasakit ulit ang mga dibdib ng mga fans) yung present line up natin ay KILALANG mga veterans and stars but that was their prime days. Hindi na nila kayang ibuhos yung best performance nila today because they have already aged.

We knew their names and we always reminded from their previous/past performances. Dati yun. Oo kaya nilang sumabay.but not today. Just saying.

Sa mga nasasaktan..ganyan talaga. Kailangang may mag sabing kapwa Pinoy…instead of coming or hearing it from the other nationalities. Let us improve instead of being sensitive and sarcastic. Sa mga naka unawa sa sinasabi ko ..thank u and hope u can assist me on explaining it better.

My stand remain still.: WE NEED NEW..FRESH. .YOUNGER..SLIMMER. .TALLER players so that we can fully use the title…POWER PINAYS.

      3) yung iba did not even try out. ayaw nilang maglaro, or hindi sila prepared maglaro internationally.

let’s give credit to whom it is due. and i give credit to this power pinays line up, which you obviously are not doing now.

  7. Maiyak iyak ako habang pinapanuod sila.. iniimagine ko lang si maizo na kalaban china dati tapos ayun nagugulangan pa nya.. eeee! bazta no nega mga baks! go powerpinays! iba sila valdez.. may time din ang mga yun but for now full support! ^_^

    1. They ranked 5th sa FIVB World Rankings. Malakas sila, MONSTER. Hasang hasa na ung team nila, mtagal na silang nglalaro as a team. kumbaga napagdaanan na nila lahat. Mahirap talagang mkscore ng mataas sa knila.

    5. Hirap na hirap tayo sa Sais nila. ndi ntin makuha, why ? akala kasi nila pag Sais mataas na ung bola. eh CHINA nga eh 🙂 baon pte ung sais nila, kya dapat pag sa Sais manggagaling ung bola, Baba baba din tayo pag may time.

Goodluck on your remaining games power pinays :))

    • true… maganda na nga ung pinakita nila eh, ang hirap lang talaga pag sobrang experienced and galing ng kalaban, nakakawala ng kumpiyansa minsan… and kung ang japan nga na 2012 olympics bronze medalist is hirap iblock and dig ung spikers ng china lalo na si zhu ting, tayo pa kaya na less ang exposure :DDD hehe

Go Power Pinays! buhayin ang volleyball sa pilipinas, this is a good start 😀

  9. We love you beng!!!! Hahahaha
Watching these girls compete with the rest of asia is overwhelming na for me… suwerte ng mga players ngayon kc may international exposure sila di tulad nung mga past few years…
The team needs support and encouragement from us supporters… at least bumabalik na tyo sa mapa ng vb… sana tuloy tuloy na to… sana support pa din tyo kahit sino nasa line-up… good vibes muna hehe

  10. hindi na pinag uusapan kung bata o matanda payat ba o mataba kailangan ntin suportahan ang POWERPINAY. pilipino tau di nman tau ibang lahi.hwag ntin isip na dpat iba ang line up ng team.lahat cla may skill at special skill pag dating sa volleyball. just support our POWERPINAYS and PRAY for the win :))

    • Who told you na hindi dapat pag usapan ang height..age n built..weight etc?

Try to read articles and have some research about sports recruitment rules n regulations.

NOT PHYSICALLY CAPABLE on a particular sport.

BUT IT DOESNT MEAN UR NOT SUPPORTING THEM if you are giving our team a CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. IT SHD COME FROM US PINOYS instead of coming it from the others.

      • Grabeh ka nman makapaghusga “NOT PHYSICALLY CAPABLE”? Ganyan ang tingin mo sa power pinays line-up? Yung mga pinagpipilitan mong mga players na matatangkad at bata nakalaro nila ang Mynamar sa Vietnam at nkalaro din ng power pinays based on the results mas ok pa yung performance ng power pinay kasi they won the game in straight sets pero yung matatangkad at bata in four straights. Ano masasabi mo ngayon?

  11. hindi ko napanuod. Kaya ayoko maggagaling. .at kahit napanuod ko. .wala ako karapatang magmarunong. . Pero dahil free magmarunong. .magmamarunong na ako. .sana pinili si benting over benito. . Anu bang klaseng set ang inexecute? Sana low fast. Kaso parang di ganun set ni saet.

  12. For me, power pinays are doing great. Pero kung long term na team, maybe they should consider this line up:

    Setters
Main: Rhea Dimaculangan (young and relatively tall)

    Liberos
    Main: Gata-Pantone
    Back-up: Reyes/Dionela

    Utilities
Main: Maizo (dahil may back-row attack siya)
    Back-up: Gonzaga

    Middle
Main: Dindin (malapit na naman siyang grumaduate)
    Ortiz (may running hit)
    Back-up: Eulalio

    Openers
    Main: Valdez
    Tabaquero
    Back-up: Vargas

They can also consider getting taller Fil-foreigners to solidify the team, specially yung middle and openers.

    • Siguro po the best setters we could use in the future are Kim Fajardo and Dmac. Salak is too old and having health problems already so she’s out of the picture. Rubie could be the veteran reserved. For Open, definitely Valdez and I’ll choose Galang instead of Tabaquero because she’s more consistent. Then a veteran addition in the likes of Bernal or Daquis. For Middle, given na si Dindin but I’m not buying Ortiz because she rarely can block nowadays. I’d choose Tubino or Marano instead (Jaja needs more experience). Utility spot is definitely for Maizo and backed up by Gonzaga. For the liberos, I agree with all your choices.

  13. Kung sabihin mang hindi physically fit ung mga naglaro ngayon para sa team, well I admit totoo un. Pero physical characteristics do not define and limit a player’s ability in volleyball.

Against vietnam sa 1st set 9-25.

    • …no offense but that young team was formed hastily..a week before the tournament and i think was only able to practice just once..young as they are now..given the proper training, support and guidance, they can be the future of philippine volleyball…let us not compare… both teams represented the country and did/ doing their best with the best of their abilities am sure..lets just be proud that with these two teams, we,ve shown asia that pinay vball still exists…

  15. I think Tubino is an excellent player even if she’s not slim. But, she should remain in her usual middle position because it is where she performs well. I’d readily choose her over Jaja Santiago simply because of her fighting spirit and attitude in court. Overall, I think the Power Pinays have great potential but an addition of a better setter and more reliable hitters in the future would be great.

  16. .experience is the best teacher!!! we know na ginawa neo ang lahat just to win… never surrender…. fight lang…the most important part in palying inside the court is just enjoy the game, be aggressive and be optimistic always… ignore the crowd if it is not favor on ur side… and also COMMUNICATION inside the court!!!! GOGOGO!!! FIGHT!!!!

  17. ..seems like someone missed the whole story behind the creation of this current national team..have no worry , having a more competitive team is already on the drawing boards..this team tho even if weak as others may percieve have proven to the rest of asia that philippine volleyball do exist…they have done their part of laying the groundwork for the emergence of pinay vball into the international scene.. give it a year or two and volleyball will be more fun in the philippines for the rest of asia..world?..to see….

  18. Just read the previous comment. I think I have to leave one.

It was never easy to compose players who are good enough to compete internationally, lalo na kung yung school officials nila, ayaw silang payagan. Look at these girls, (Power Pinays) they may not be physically fit, injured, overweight, weak or whatsoever, ATLEAST THEY HAVE THE HEART, DEDICATION & DETERMINATION to represent OUR COUNTRY. Let’s just be proud of them. What we or they need is experience to bag when they come home and our country, on the other hand, has to do something to improve the program. Look, China has learned something from them (RPWVT), even their coach, Lang Ping is positive that our girls will improve in time. So, let’s just hope for the best, be proud of these girls and be proud to be Pinoy! 🙂

  19. Wuuuuuutttttttt???? *high note*

“they have aged, weaker, less trained, less dedicated to trainings (with injuries), some of them are overweight”???

I really appreciate your concern about Phil. volleyball, pero if you want players na “new younger and newer names” asan ang experience dun?

If you really know volleyball, you should know it’s not about the height and the “weight”. Bakit si Ruby de leon? fit ba sya? but she’s one of the best setter in our country.

Magagaling ang nasa line-up. Kulang lang ng panahon para mag training, they had DAYS before AVC.

Take note, these old, common names ang lumalaban para sa Pilipinas.

Siguro tiwala na lang pede natin maicontribute.

  20. sabi nga ng friend ko na avid volleyball fan, “It’s not an overnight thing—winning games and championships. We need a solid program and a core group to work with.”

Giving PHL players exposure sa international competition is already a good start. For sure, an dami na nilang natutunan. Suportahan lang po natin sila 😀

  21. China: Drop balls. We don’t have that. We’re learning.”

And now they learned something new from us. How can we beat them next year? I dont think we can. (Just saying) We need YOUNG, TALLER and Physically fit player (slimmer).

“Pitted against a much taller and more experienced squad”

we shd have anticipated these. Obviously our Power Pinays were short of power. This is not UAAP..not Vleague..not Ordinary league. Let us admit..our players are old..not fit (overweight) and short. LET US LEARN TO ACCEPT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM instead of being SENSITIVE.

Hopefully next international league we can produce new young, taller, fit and stronger players. Our current players were good, but that was 10 or 5 years ago. Yes they WERE. (Most of them were stars on their era) But not today..they have aged, weaker, less trained, less dedicated to trainings (with injuries), some of them are overweight.

Good luck next year..but I hope it would be totally a NEW LINE UP. Not the old and common names. But with new younger and newer names.

Umuwi man sila ng talo, at lkeast they did their best.

      • I agree with risse… They started the fight, let us support them in the best way we can…kahit man lang sa pagpuri sa ginawa nila, instead of sabihing kelangan na ulit silang palitan.. Better stay muna sa sinasabing “overweight” “old” etc. n players who have the courage to bring our flag in the international scene and let them share their experience in building the new generation. We can’t get success in an immediate 5 steps forward…one step at a time muna sana…

Bsta for these #PowerPinays … Good job already..

    • How old is old? How tall is your taller? How strong is stronger? How physically fit slimmer would be?We should have anticipated this?-We are talking about Japan and China Volleyball team here, hello??!Please don’t make us look stupid.!Injured?Yes..they were injured because of their passion for the sport. They are no women of steel..even steel rusts, bends and eventually breaks.
Though I support the needed reform and intensification on our volleyball program, let me remind you that there is no such thing as an overnight winning-machine team no matter how stronger, how taller, how younger and not overweight your players are(do you have issues on obesity- just asking, you know.. emphasis on OVERWEIGHT thingy). It takes more than that. Dedication, discipline, humility, courage, determination, self-sacrifice and most especially the love for our country are among the virtues I saw in this team.Im proud of them. BEING AWAY FROM HOME, IT’S NOT EASY TO STAND WHEN YOUR OWN PEOPLE FIND YOU LACKING AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU ARE LOSING.LET US JUST THANK THEM FOR GIVING WHAT THEY HAVE—THEIR HEARTS.

    • YOUNG, TALLER and Physically fit player (slimmer)??? no offense meant ha if yan lang qualification mo para maging good vball player can you consider Tajima as one of those?

partida pa yan they’ve aged but still they manage to make it a close game and even win a game regardless kulang sa intl exposure..

Appreciate what we have now wala naman mawawala..

    • Why are your favorites not in thailand? Google! Or backtrack tweets from local volleyball digital influencers. Rather than blabbering about the team or criticizing, just shut up coz this team’s got the heart and the guts to step up! Empires are not made overnight!
